A 10-year-old girl died from dengue fever on Saturday in the southern province of Dong Nai, bringing fatalities from the disease in the province to five.
Nguyen Thi Anh Nguyet was admitted to Dong Nai Children's Hospital on July 13 with a high fever.
She was diagnosed with dengue fever and then fell into a coma. Her condition quickly deteriorated over the next several hours.
The girl suffered breathing problems, liver and kidney failure and massive bleeding.
Doctors from Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospitals 1 and 2 were invited to join a consultation, and they decided to put the patient on hemodialysis and blood plasma replacement.
However, the patient's condition did not improve after 13 days of treatment.
Last Friday, she was transferred to HCMC Hospital of Tropical Diseases.
She died at around 2 a.m. the following day.
Dengue fever usually peaks in August, but a large number of infections were already reported in June from HCMC and southern provinces.
More than 5,685 dengue fever cases have been reported this year in HCMC.
