Nung girl wins 2nd Miss Ethnic Vietnam contest

Trieu Thi Ha of the Nung ethnic community from the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang defeated 59 other contestants to win the Miss Ethnic Vietnam 2011 crown on Saturday.

Ha, a 19-year-old student of Thai Nguyen University of Economics and Business Administration, received a cash award of VND100 milion and other gifts from organizers and sponsors.

At the Q&A session during the final round, she sang a traditional folk song of her community as her answer to the question: "If you are asked to introduce your ethnic community's traditional culture, what will you present?"

Her presentation received applause from local audience on the final night held at the Hoa Binh Theater in HCM City. At the talent session last night, Miss Ethnic Vietnam, 1.69 meters tall, also impressed the jury with her performance on the dan tinh, a traditional musical instrument of the Nung people.

According to the organizers, the National Committee for Ethnic Minorities and the Ciat Company, Ha, born to a poor family, rides a bicycle from her hometown in Cao Bang province to Thai Nguyen town everyday to study.

The cash award of VND100million can be useful for her study and life, said Kim Hong, head of the contest's organizing committee.

The first and second-runner up awards were won respectively by Pham Thi Thanh Tuyen of the Kinh (the majority community) people and Son Thi Du Ra of the Khmer ethnic community from the Mekong Delta Province of Tra Vinh.

Other titles, including Miss Talent, Miss Ao Dai, Miss Tourism, Best Skin, and Best Face were also awarded during the contest.

After the contest, the Miss Vietnam Ethnic and the first and second-runner ups will be equipped and trained necessary skills to compete at international beauty competitions in future, according to the organizer.

The beauty contest which was first held in 2007, aims to celebratethe cultural diversity and traditional beauty of ethnic women in Vietnam. A total of 147 contestants from 33 different ethnic groups were selected to the contest's semifinal round this year.
