The winner of a televised singing contest released her first single during a press briefing last week; the song is the first Vietnamese recording produced by Universal Music--the largest music corporation in America.
Tran Hai Chau's pop single “Out of control” was written over the course of five months by songwriter Duong Khac Linh who signed the Universal contract as her mentor.
News website tiin.vn said the music video was directed by Bone Ho who is famous for producing videos for local pop singers; it was produced by Ho Chi Minh City filmmaking firm iFocus Media.
Chau inked her contract after winning the first season of “The Winner Is” last August, grabbing the top cash prize of VND630 million (US$30,000) as well. Universal’s $1.9 billion takeover of EMI Music, one of the biggest record companies in the world, was approved by US and European regulators in 2012.
Several Vietnamese singing-contest shows (e.g. Sao Mai, Vietnam Idol and The Voice Vietnam) have offered winners a deal with Universal, but Chau is the first and only winner to go for one.
Others have followed their own plans with their local teams.
Chau will enter the long list of artists working with Universal--a list that includes Grammy winners and nominees, legends and trendy artists, as well as the biggest cash earners in the music world.
The 21-year-old from the central city of Da Nang is expected to release an R&B dance album, her mentor Linh told Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper last year.
He said Universal Asia is seeking sponsors to promote her across Asia.
