The designers of the Dragon Bridge in the central city of Da Nang have won the Grand Conceptor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.
The Engineering Excellence Grand Award was given to the designer joint-venture between Louis Berger and Ammann & Whitney, VnExpress reported.
Seven other projects, mostly in the US, won the award, which is otherwise known as “the Academy Awards of the engineering industry.”
As the sixth bridge to cross the Han River, the 666-meter long Rong (Dragon) Bridge was put into use on March 29, 2012.
The six-lane bridge boasts a 15,000 LED lighting system that allow it to change color at night, and on weekends; it also breathes fire and water.
The low-deck bridge cost VND1.7 trillion (nearly US$8 million) to build, according to the news report.
The bridge has already won international awards like the Lighting Design Awards 2014 that recognizes excellence in architectural lighting design.
Every year the Engineering Excellence Award’s judges short-list 200 works from thousands of entries to grant them the National Award, according to the report.
Twenty-four projects are nominated for the Honor Award, and eight receive the Grand Award.
The overall best project receives the Grand Conceptor Award.
All the projects are judged based on originality, innovation, value to the public and the engineering profession, complexity, social and economic considerations, sustainability, and exceeding client needs.
