A zebra and an antelope were born Friday in a zoo in the southern province of Binh Duong.

Duong Thanh Phi, director of Dai Nam Zoo, said the baby zebra weighed around 30 kilograms.

Their mothers had been bought from South Africa three years ago.

The zebra was the second to be born in Vietnam after an earlier one at Saigon Zoo.

Several subspecies of the animal in South Africa, such as the Cape mountain zebra and the Grévy's zebra, are highly endangered since they are hunted for their skin and meat.

Dai Nam Zoo also helped deliver a hippopotamus in July, three years after its mother was bought from an Israeli zoo.
