Yahoo! will end its seven years of providing blog service in Vietnam as of January 17, it announced on December 6, saying it will "focus on upgrading the major services and creating more and better products."
Users will still be able to get back the contents of their blogs, including posts, comments and pictures after the blog site Yahoo! Blog Vietnam shuts down until March 14 of next year from another website, download.blog.yahoo.com, according to the announcement.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngoc, marketing manager of Yahoo! Blog Vietnam confirmed the announcement with Thanh Nien, adding that this is part a strategy of Yahoo!, an American multinational internet company, to rework products and applications that do not benefit users or are "unimpressive."
Yahoo! decided to shut down Yahoo! Blog Vietnam despite its popularity among Vietnamese bloggers since its profits are small compared to the corporation's global business, she said without providing more details.
"Yahoo! will put its efforts into making new products which bring users a more interesting experience; launching new products which are more suitable for the market," Ngoc said.
Some bloggers expressed their sadness and disappointment with the company's decision as they must say goodbye to a cyber-spot where they are accustomed to unburdening their thoughts and where they've accumulated many memories.
"I was so upset upon hearing the news I didn't know what to say. Why doesn't Yahoo! care about people's feelings? So sad," one blogger nicknamed Sunny_Tim wrote.
Many others criticized Yahoo!'s sudden move.
"It's a place for us to open our hearts, to share love amid our busy lives, but Yahoo! said that it "˜doesn't benefit users.' I have trusted and loved Yahoo! so much and now I suffer a shock, a deep wound," another netizen with nickname TrungNguyen was quoted by Thanh Nien as saying .
An unnamed official from Yahoo! was quoted by local media as saying in June that more than 6 million people were using Yahoo! Blog at that time. A total 32.4 million people in Vietnam were considered Internet users at the end of June, according to the country's General Statistics Office.
But Yahoo! refused to unveil the exact number of bloggers using its service in Vietnam now.
Yahoo!Blog is the newest blog service providing by Yahoo! after Yahoo! 360 Plus, its predecessor was closed after three years of operations. The blog service of Yahoo! made its debut within the Vietnamese market in 2005.
Yahoo! currently provides Vietnamese users with many services including Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Search.
