Vietnamese students have won three silver and one bronze medals at the International Informatics Olympiad held September 22-30 in Italy, according to the Education Ministry.

The silver winners are Nguyen Viet Dung from Hanoi Education University's Gifted High School, Vu Dinh Quang Dat from Hanoi National University's Gifted High School of Natural Sciences, and Nguyen Tuan Anh from Tran Phu Gifted High School in the northern city of Hai Phong.

Nguyen Huu Thanh, a student at Le Quy Don Gifted High School in the central city of Da Nang, won the bronze medal.

One of five International Science Olympiads for secondary and high students, the 24th informatics competition hosted more than 300 contestants from over 80 countries around the world.

During the annual contest, competitors are challenged with algorithmic tasks while showing their information technology skills like problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming and testing.

The competition, initiated in 1989, was the last of five such Olympiads that Vietnam attended this year.

Vietnamese delegations had earlier won medals, including four golds, at the event's mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry contests.
