A university team from the southern province of Dong Nai took second prize Tuesday (September 21), at the 2010 ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest in Cairo.

Despite the fact that the LH LED team from Lac Hong University was defeated by a Chinese machine in the final round, they considered their efforts a success. Vietnam had initially aimed for third prize, Dang Duy So, chief of Vietnam Robocon delegation, said.

The contest theme "RoboPharaohs Build Pyramids" attracted 17 teams from 16 countries and territories this year.

Competitors were challenged with designing and building robots capable of constructing pyramids (without using any binding material) from three blocks.

Last year, the SPK-Knight team from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education won the third prize at the Asia- wide contest in Tokyo.

Since the contest was initiated in Japan in 2002, Vietnamese entrants have made it to five out of seven finals and won first-prize three times in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

Next year's contest will be held in Thailand.
