Vietnam to host UNESCO world congress

A world congress of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be held this August in Hanoi, it was announed at a press conference Wednesday.

Some 300 representatives from UNESCO and more than 100 member countries will attend the event which would mainly discuss youth-related issues, Nguyen Xuan Thang, general secretary of the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations, said at the conference.

Scheduled for August 18-22, the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations' eighth congress would celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Founded in July 1981 with its general secretariat located in Paris, the federation works to provide co-ordination services and encourage cooperation in various fields among national federations via inter-regional and sub-regional programs.

Thang also announced that the Vietnamese federation will choose Vietnam Idol 2010, Uyen Linh, as its first goodwill ambassador.
