Vietnam is reviewing and improving its legal system in accordance with world regulations on nuclear safety, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh said Monday at a meeting with Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a report published Tuesday, Tuoi Tre also quoted Ninh as saying that the recent nuclear accident in Japan is a lesson for all countries in the world, including Vietnam, in producing and using nuclear power.

It is Vietnam's policy to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes, he added.

Later that day Amano also met with Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, who reiterated that "Vietnam is committed to guaranteeing nuclear safety and security, preventing proliferation of nuclear weapons and to nuclear disarmament," the newspaper reported.

Amano praised the Vietnamese government's efforts and stressed that IAEA would support Vietnam in developing nuclear power for peaceful purposes.
