Vietnam has won the first runner-up prize in an international programming contest initiated by Japan, according to a report in Tuoi Tre Monday.

Dr. Pham Ngoc Hung, who led two university students to attend PROCON, which ended on December 23, said Vietnam was the only foreign team to receive a prize from organizers.

The prize was the country's highest achievement at the annual contest started in 2004, the newspaper quoted Hung as saying.

Vu Viet Duc and Vu Thanh Tu, both students at the University of Engineering and Technology under the Hanoi-based Vietnam National University, were challenged to restore damaged pictures to their original quality in the competition.

Contestants were given stamps with hints to solve the challenge, Hung said.
