The Ho Chi Minh Youth Union launched its annual volunteer program in the central province of Ha Tinh on Sunday.

Nguyen Dac Vinh, a secretary of the union's central committee, said at the launching ceremony that this year volunteer operations would focus on poor localities across the country where volunteers will be sent to make contributions to development.

The program will also promote traffic safety, environmental protection, commemoration of war heros as well as charity activities in Laos.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, in recent years the program has attracted the participation of millions of young people, creating an environment for them to improve their sense of responsibility to the community and offering the tools for self-training regarding attitude and morale.

The images of young people engaged in the program providing health checks-up and treatment in rural areas, and planting trees, have "made a deep impression on society," Phuc said.

Following the ceremony, thousands of young people headed to rural areas in Ha Tinh to donate blood and build toilets in poor localities.

That same day, representatives from the union's committee met with a delegation from the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union to plan youth exchanges.
