A 22-year-old Vietnamese student was sentenced to three weeks in prison on Monday for taking upskirt videos of women with his smartphone in Singapore last year, local media reported.
Nguyen Tri Dung, who has been studying at a local university for two years, was charged with four counts of "insulting the modesty" of his victims, but only two charges were proceeded on, according to a report on The Straits Times' website.
He was arrested on September 16 of 2014 after being caught in the act taking two videos of a 27-year-old Peruvian woman at a post office where he came to send a parcel to his friend in Germany.
The victim was writing an address on parcel, when she felt a piece of plastic brushing against her leg, the news website reported.
She turned and saw Dung holding a phone in his hand, so she grabbed the device and found two upskirt videos of her there, before calling police.
The student was also charged with committing similar crime in other public areas like MRT stations.
He could have been jailed up to a year, fined, or both, for each count of insulting the modesty of a woman, according to the news report.
His lawyer was quoted as arguing that that he was a first-time offender, that he was "remorseful", and that this would be his last offense.
The lawyer also said his client had an internship with a reputable company and would be starting an exchange program on an education ministry tuition grant soon. A custodial sentence would thus deprive him of these opportunities, the lawyer was quoted by The Straits Times as saying.
