People in the central province of Quang Tri have found a large bird believed to be a sea hawk that rarely shows up in Vietnam.

The bird, of more than two kilograms with a wingspan of more than one meter and yellow legs 20 centimeters tall, is being kept in an iron cage in Hai Ba Commune, Hai Lang District.

Its feathers are light brown with white dots.

Locals said they have never seen a bird like it.

Dang Xuan Khuong and Nguyen Ngoc Trai found the bird in late October at a local beach. Khuong fired rubber bullet to bring it down.

It's tongue had been injured and was bleeding.

Dr Vo Quy, 83-year-old zoologist, told news website VnExpress the bird might belong to the sea hawk species (Pandion heliatus).

The raptor is distributed across the globe but is rarely seen in Vietnam, and only in winter, if at all, he said.
