A rare sea turtle weighing more than 15 kilograms was released to the sea in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu on Wednesday.

A Vietnam News Agency report said local agencies found the turtle, which was identified as Caretta caretta, kept captive in the house of 54-year-old Huynh Trung Truc, following tip offs from local residents.

Truc said he bought the reptile, better known as loggerhead, from a fisherman one week before in Bac Lieu Town for VND1 million (US$47.96).

It weighed 15.4 kilograms then and its rear legs were injured, he added.

The news agency quoted experts as saying that it is illegal to catch, trade or transport the turtle, which is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

In Vietnam, the loggerhead is mainly found off the coast in the northern city of Hai Phong.
