A couple in the central province of Nghe An on Wednesday voluntarily handed over a 100-kilogram bear to local forest protection authorities to release the animal into the wild, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

Pham Xuan Dung and Vo Thi Lien of Vinh City bought the bear as a pet 10 years ago, when it weighed only 7 kilograms.

The provincial Forest Protection Department has installed a microchip into the bear for supervision.

The couple, whose identity has not been revealed, said many people had offered big sums of money for the bear, but they had refused to sell it.

After the couple handed over the bear to the department, it was given to a bear rescue center in Tam Dao, Vinh Phuc Province, where it will be taken care of till it can be released released into the forest.

Authorities said it is the fourth bear that has been voluntarily handed over by local residents in Vinh City.
