The Ministry of Information and Communications will not license 4G services until 2015 or later, news website Saigon Times has said in a report.

On 4G, multimedia transmission is approximately times faster than on 3G, which Vietnam still uses.

Deputy communications minister Le Nam Thang told the news website that the decision is aimed at helping mobile services providers fully benefit from 3G services which operate at just 10 percent of capacity.

4G has yet to become popular globally and few mobile phones can operate on it, he added.

The ministry has said that in future 4G services would be licensed through competitive bidding.

It permitted several companies, including the military-run Viettel and FPT Telecom, to pilot 4G services two years ago in major cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

It was these companies that reported back to the ministry that the industry is not ready yet for 4G services.
