Authorities in the northern province of Thanh Hoa on Saturday released a dolphin caught by local fishermen the same day.

The 1-meter long dolphin was caught by a group of fishermen casting nets off the coast of Hoang Thanh Commune in Hoang Hoa District.

The men then sold the dolphin to Nguyen Van Thoi, a fish trader in the nearby Hoang Hai District who later asked employees of the Thanh Hoa Fisheries Breeding Center to keep it in an aquarium because he could not accommodate it.

Acting on reports from the center staff and several residents, the Thanh Hoa Fisheries Protection Agency seized the dolphin and released it at sea.

Thousands of tourists and locals were attracted to the site of the dolphin's release. Many locals said the dolphin's appearance meant good luck for local tourism as it coincided with the launch of a coastal eco-tourism area.
