A fisherman in the north central province of Thanh Hoa caught a 100-kilogram sea turtle believed to be an endangered species on Thursday, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.
Le Viet Son of Hai Ninh Commune, Tinh Gia District, was catching jellyfish some 10 nautical miles from shore when he saw a turtle stuck in his net, struggling to escape.
He called other fishermen nearby to help bring the turtle onshore.
He then reported the discovery and handed over the animal to local authorities.
The turtle is 1.2 meters in length. There are some painted red marks on its shell and some minor wounds on its body.
The species of the sea turtle has not been identified, but local authorities said it may be one of the five endangered sea turtle species in Vietnam.
