Foreign Trade University has been named the winner in the Vietnam final of the CFA Institute Research Challenge, a prestigious international event held for the third time in the country.
The team will represent Vietnam at the Asia-Pacific regional final in Thailand on 23-24 April 2014.
Fifty-four students from 11 universities in Vietnam took part in the qualifying round of the competition, which was organized locally by CFA Institute members.
The four teams that advanced to the national final are from Foreign Trade University, Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, International University, and Banking Academy of Vietnam.
The finalists presented their analyses and recommendations on The Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Company (HOSE - CSM) to a panel of judges comprised of investment experts, namely: Mrs. Luong Thi My Hanh, CFA, deputy CEO of Vietnam Fund Management; Mr. Tran Chau Danh, CFA, chief investment officer of Dai-Ichi Life Fund Management; Mrs. Duong Do Quyen, Managing Partner - Private Equity at Dragon Capital Group Limited; and Mr. Paul Smith, CFA, Managing Director for Asia Pacific of CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals.
"The students from Foreign Trade University have demonstrated that they have what it takes to be professional research analysts. In the highly competitive and fast-changing finance industry, knowledge, competence, and adherence to ethics will differentiate you from others. We need more young people like them to build a trustworthy finance industry," says Paul Smith, CFA, managing director for Asia Pacific of CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge, now on its eighth year, is an international educational competition for college-and graduate-level students that allows contestants to take on the role of professional investment research analysts.
In 2012-2013, more than 3,500 students from 775 universities in 54 countries worldwide participated in the competition.
They are tested on their ability to value a stock, write an initiation-of-coverage report, and present their recommendations. Participants receive hands-on mentoring from investment professionals on best practices in equity research and analysis throughout the competition.
"The competition brings university students and investment professionals together in a unique setting, not only offering a platform for networking with people from different markets, but also promoting ethics and professional excellence and the value of a career in the finance industry," says Vo Sang Xuan Vinh, CFA, representing CFA Institute members in Vietnam.
"All the teams have demonstrated critical thinking, analytical skill, and confidence in handling tough questions from a panel of experienced industry professionals after months of preparation and hard work."
Following the Vietnam final, 23 individuals were awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation in a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City with Nguyen Doan Hung, former vice-chairman of the State Securities Commission as guests of honor.
To earn the CFA designation, candidates must pass three levels of rigorous exams, fulfill four years of work experience, and abide by the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.
There are 18,822 CFA charterholders in Asia Pacific, 91 of them in Vietnam.
