The King of Belgium will grant the Grand Officer medal to a Vietnamese professor for his efforts to connect the two countries through the field of education.
Dr. Nguyen Dang Hung will be the only Asian among 30 people to receive the Grand Officer of King Albert II medal.
The retired professor has spent 40 years studying and working in Belgium, applied Belgian insights to help colleges in Vietnam in teaching, scientific research and training graduates. He has also encouraged Vietnamese students to study in Belgium.
He was formerly the Head of the LTAS-Fracture Mechanics of Solids division at the University of Liège.
For many years, he worked as the coordinator for cooperation programs between Belgian and Vietnamese colleges, including Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Hanoi Polytechnics University.
He also helped train several Vietnamese scientists obtain doctorate degrees in Europe under the combined auspices of the Liège and Hanoi Construction University.
The Order of Crown's Grand Officer medal is given to individuals who makee important contribution in arts, literature, science, technology and commerce in Belgium.
This is the second time the overseas Vietnamese professor is receiving the honor. He got the first in 1999 from King Léopold II.
