Authorities in the central province of Ha Tinh on Monday praised a local boy who had saved a teacher during a flash flood last week.
Nguyen Huu Thang, an 11th-grade student at Cu Huy Can School, was on his way to school on Saturday morning with his friends when he heard somebody screaming from a flooded stream nearby.
He jumped in and struggled with the strong flows for 20 minutes. He finally saved Tran Thi Manh, a teacher at his school.
Manh said she and her husband were rowing a boat to school when the boat was suddenly flipped.
Her husband managed to hold on to it, but she was swept away.
He was later rescued by Thang's friends.
A charity fund on Monday offered Thang a reward of VND1 million (US$44.5) for his brave act.
