The Ministry of Natural Resources and Development has asked provincial and city administrations to halt construction on 27 golf courses not listed in the government's zoning plan.
The illegal golf courses are being built in 13 provinces and cities nationwide, according to the ministry. The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang tops the list with five projects.
Under the zoning plan approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Vietnam will have 90 golf courses by 2020. However, provincial and city administrations have greenlighted 117, the ministry says.
Inspections by the ministry have also revealed that more than 50 percent of the land area belonging to golf projects is dedicated to tourism parks, trade centers and villas.
