The PetroVietnam Power Corporation Friday held a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of a wind power plant on Phu Quy Island in the central province of Binh Thuan.
Located in Long Hai and Ngu Phung communes, the plant will have three 2MW turbines churning out 25.4 million Kwh per year once it begins operations in February 2011.
Its annual electricity output will be 2.5 times higher than that of the diesel-power plant located on the Phu Quy Island.
All the equipment at the VND334-billion (US$17.1 million) plant is supplied by Argentina-based IMPFA Corp.
The project will help ease the current power shortage on Phu Quy and boost socio-economic development of the island, local officials said.
