South Korea has licensed imports of Vietnamese dragon fruit, becoming the third export market for the fruit after the US and Japan.

Dragon fruit is Vietnam's first fresh fruit that has gained access to South Korea, said the Post-Import Plant Protection Center No. 2 under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

South Korea requires that fresh fruits are heat-treated in Vietnam before they are exported.

Earlier this year, South Korean experts visited Vietnam to inspect dragon fruit-growing areas and the processing system.

The center said it was now in talks with authorities in Australia and New Zealand to help Vietnamese dragon fruit penetrate these markets as well.
