Minimum monthly salaries at local and foreign firms in Vietnam will increase by between VND100,000 and VND370,000 (US$5 and $19) next year, the government said Wednesday.

The wages will rise from January 1 or July 1, depending on geographical sites, the government said on its website, quoting a new decree.

Currently, local companies are ordered to pay their staff between at least VND730,000 and VND980,000 per month in accordance with regional delineations.

Meanwhile, employees at foreign-invested units receive no less than VND1 million to VND1.34 million.

After the rise, minimum pay will range from VND830,000 to VND1.55 million.

For skilled employees, salaries will be at least 7 percent higher than the minimum wage, according to the government's stipulation.
