PetroVietnam Marine Shipyard JSC in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, a subsidiary of PetroVietnam, launched a US$230-million jackup rig Sunday.
Tam Dao 05 weighs 18,000 tons and can drill to a depth of nine kilometers.
Its design is based on the JU-2000E rig made by the US’s Friede&Goldman, and its construction began in October last year.
The rig was built for Vietsovpetro, a Vietnam-Russia oil and gas joint venture.
It will be the second self-elevating unit to be built by PV Shipyard after Tam Dao 03 that has been in operation since 2012.
Tam Dao 03 weighs 12,000 tons and can drill up to six kilometers.
PV Shipyard also upgraded the Singapore-built Tam Dao 02 for Vietsovpetro in October last year.
