The CMA CGM Laperouse moored in Cai Mep Port on Monday has become the largest container ship to call on a Vietnamese port.
The French carrier CMA CGM will add more ships similar in size to the Laperhouse on the Asia-Europe trade lane, starting in March. The ship has 13,830 20-foot equivalent units of capacity.
The Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), built through a joint venture between the Vietnam-based Saigon Port, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and APM Terminals, opened in March.
A press release from CMA CGM quoted Jean-Charles Tassoni, general director of CMA CGM Vietnam, as saying that ultra large container ships of 14,000 TEU or larger are becoming the staple of the Asia-Europe trades.
Nguyen Xuan Ky, Deputy General Director of CMIT, was quoted as saying that he expected an "increasing demand" for Vietnamese terminals equipped to handle ultra large container ships.
