Regulators are examining Prudential's bid for American International Assurance to ensure that the deal respects antitrust laws before it is approved, an official from the Vietnam Competition Authority said.

He said the law allowed mergers undertaken by businesses that would together hold a combined maximum of 30-50 percent of the market share in certain sectors and fields after the merger.

As AIA's business was "considerably smaller" than Prudential's, their coming together would not be a problem for Vietnamese regulators, the Wall Street Journal quoted Prudential's head of Asian operations Barry Stowe as saying.
