Thailand's leading retailer Central Group has announced an expansion of its presence in Vietnam by bringing the Robinsons Department Store to Hanoi next month.
Chief executive Tos Chirathivat told the Bangkok Post newspaper that the opening follows the group’s successful distribution of its clothing stores SuperSports, Crocs and New Balance in Vietnam through its subsidiaries.
He noted the high purchasing power of the 90-million strong country, of which 60 percent are of employment age.
“This makes Vietnam a target market with high potential for growth and an excellent destination for investors in the retail sector,” Tos said.
Robinson’s first outlet is planned on 10,000 square meters at the entertainment and shopping complex Royal City.
Alan Thomson, chairman of Robinsons Department Store, said Hanoi and nearby areas have shown signs of healthy and sustainable growth with increasing incomes.
Central Group plans to open a second outlet in Ho Chi Minh City late this year. The two outlets are estimated to need around 1,000 staff.
