A Taiwanese shoes producer in Ho Chi Minh City has been fined more than US$28,000 for multiple violations of environmental protection laws, the Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Tuesday.
The city People's Committee imposed the fine on Pou Yuen Vietnam Co., Ltd. in Binh Tan District after investigations found that the firm committed nine violations, the most serious of which was emitting gas and dust that was more than five times the permitted levels. For this, it was fined VND135 million ($6,500).
The company, which is among the biggest employers in HCMC, was also in the news last month when more than 1,000 employees went on a wildcat strike over payment and hygiene issues.
Earlier this month, Taiwanese plating company LongTech Precision Vietnam in the northern province of Bac Ninh was caught discharging untreated wastewater through secret pipes it buried underground.
