Binh Phuoc Province police are investigating a Taiwanese livestock company suspected of disposing of hundreds of dead pigs illegally near a major river.
A representative of Viet Phuoc, which raises 27,000 pigs at a farm in the province’s Hon Quan District, has admitted to the dumping, Tien Phong newspaper reported.
About 10 pigs died every day and the company left them near the upstream of the Saigon River, the representative said, adding that an incinerator used to burn dead pigs was broken.
Inspectors have also collected samples of the company’s wastewater and water from the river for testing. Mass fish deaths were reported in the area on July 6.
The Saigon River is a major source of tap water for millions of people in Ho Chi Minh City and nearby provinces.
