Samsung Electronics Co. said it is going to expand its factories in Vietnam so that made-in-Vietnam mobile devices will account for 50 percent of its global sales of smartphones.
The company now has two factories in northern Vietnam, a US$2.5-billion plant in Bac Ninh Province and a $1.2-billion plant in Thai Nguyen Province.
Its biggest mobile phone manufacturing factory in the world, the Bac Ninh plant has produced 35 percent of Galaxy smartphones sold globally, Samsung Electronics Vietnam said.
The plant also manufactures other products like tablets.
Meanwhile, the Thai Nguyen plant, which went into operation in March, has the designed capacity of 100 million products per year.
According to the management board of Yen Phong Industrial Park in Bac Ninh, SEV was supposed to pay $35.4 million in taxes for the first five months of last year, but tax breaks reduced the amount to nearly $17.3 million.
