Local mobile operator MobiFone has signed a contract with Ericsson to obtain new mobile video technology, hoping to meet the increasing demand for video by Vietnamese phone users.
The technology, developed by video solutions provider Vantrix and Ericsson, will allow 29 million MobiFone subscribers to have improved real-time video viewing on their mobile phones, according to a statement released Thursday.
MobiFone, a subsidiary of state-owned VNPT Group, is one of the first operators worldwide to use the technology for mobile broadband traffic optimization, Ericsson said.
"With MobiFone's impressive subscriber base, scalability becomes particularly crucial," said Jan Wassenius, head of Ericsson Vietnam. MobiFone holds a 32 percent share of the country's mobile communications market, the statement said.
Because of limited fixed network availability, Vietnamese people will view more video on their mobile devices than their PCs, said Chairman of MobiFone, Le Ngoc Minh.
"Given the explosive demand for high-quality mobile video, we wanted a solution that could help decrease our transmission costs while providing an enhanced real-time viewing experience and faster downloads for our users," Minh said.
