Customs in the northern province of Hai Phong said an official Ford Vietnam dealer may have evaded taxes amounting VND61.5 billion by declaring luxury SUVs as tanks to claim tax exemption.

Capital Ford Corp. in Hanoi imported 10 bulletproof armored Hummer H2 SUVs from 2006 to 2008 and declared them as tanks at customs, local news website VietNamNet reported Friday, citing the city customs department. By doing so, the company did not have to pay any import duties and luxury taxes.

The same model, which costs US$120,000 per vehicle, has been imported by other companies and they had to pay an import tax of at least 83 percent and special consumption tax of 30 percent.

Hai Phong has reported the case to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, which will decide if Capital Ford had committed tax evasion, VietNamNet said.

Capital Ford is an importer of vehicles for national defense purposes and the case needs to be examined carefully, Nguyen Van Can, deputy director of the General Customs Department, told VnExpress, another online news service.
