Demand for air conditioners and fans have soared over the past several weeks in Ho Chi Minh City as residents seek respite from the prolonged hot weather conditions.
Lien An Thach, sales manager of Cho Lon Electronics Center, said sales of these products in the past two weeks had doubled against earlier weeks, accounting for 60 percent of the total revenue.
He said despite a 3-5 percent increase in prices, customers whose homes heat up like an oven in summer are buying aircons and fans heavily.
The Saigon-Nguyen Kim Shopping Center said sales of cooling appliances in early April increased 150 percent over the same period last year.
"Air conditioners that cost VND4.5 million-5.5 million (US$237-$290), are in huge demand," said Nguyen Viet Tiep, head of communications and events at the center.
The center said customers also picked up juicers and liquidizers to beat the heat.
The buying frenzy was also easy to see at other electronics centers in the city like Thien Hoa and De Nhat Phan Khang. These centers said they had to recruit more customer service staff to meet the rising demand.
The weather will remain hot until this weekend in the southern region and may reach peaks of 42 degrees Celsius, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said Monday.
