Gov't okays expansion of Dung Quat refinery

The government has approved a plan to increase the annual capacity of Dung Quat refinery from 6.5 to 10 million tons.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai consented to PetroVietnam's proposal after consulting wtih concerned ministries. Hai asked the state-owned oil and gas consortium to implement the expansion plan in accordance with construction and investment laws.

Vietnam began commercial production at Dung Quat, the country's first oil refinery, in February last year. The plant is designed to supply about one-third of the nation's fuel demand in 2010.

The refinery has processed more than 5 million tons of crude oil since February this year and produced more than 4.2 tons of various oil products for the local market.
