First Son La turbine goes online

The first 400 MW turbine of the Son La Hydroelectric Plant, Southeast Asia's largest, was put into operation Friday.

The plant's five remaining turbines, which also have the capacity of 400 MW each, are set to operate by the end of 2012. 

Once all of them become operational, the plant, based in the northern province of Son La, will generate 10.2 billion kWh of power for the national grid each year, according to national power utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

In related news, Nguyen Tien Thoa, head of the Price Management Department under the Ministry of Finance, said prices of electricity, petrol, water, and coal would be kept unchanged through the first quarter of next year in line with instructions from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
