Mekong Delta provinces have set a target of exporting 5.5 million tons of rice this year, or around 90 percent of the country's planned shipments.
Major markets for the Delta rice will be Asian, African and European countries as well as North America, trade officials say.
The provinces are expected to harvest between 22 million and 22 million tons of paddy from a combined area of 3.8 million hectares in 2011. Trade officials said the cooperation between local dealers and exporters will be strengthened and a profit of at least 30 percent will be secured for rice farmers.
Vietnam shipped 6.7 million tons of rice last year, surpassing the previous record high of 6.05 million tons set in 2009. The Mekong Delta alone exported 5.6 million tons.
