Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Compal will next month reopen its US$500-million factory in the northern province of Vinh Phuc, which it had shut down in 2011, news website Saigon Times Online reported Thursday.
The company plans to produce smartphones and notebooks at the factory, Compal vice president Bruce Riggs was quoted as telling Vinh Phuc's chairman Nguyen Van Tri at a meeting earlier this week.
The 100-hectare factory was licensed in 2007 to manufacture laptops and LCD TVs.
It was slated to open in 2009 but did not go into operation until the beginning of 2011. Within a few months Compal closed the factory, citing the global economic slowdown.
