Vietnam’s government has allowed international airports to install slot machines to entertain departing passengers, signalling a change of heart over gambling.
A statement from the government office said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the proposal from the Airports Corporation of Vietnam to bing slots to its international airports.
It is still not clear if Vietnamese passengers are allowed to play.
Vietnam, which bans gambling, only allows foreigners to enter its 43 designated places with slot machines and eight casinos.
The casinos made VND1.38 trillion (US$61.4 million) last year, according to figures from the finance ministry.
Another survey by the Ministry of Public Security showed that casinos in Cambodia, which are mostly filled with Vietnamese players, earn around $250 million a year.
