The “Por la Obra de la Vida” or “For the Work of Life” award was delivered by Cuban Association of Agriculture and Forestry Professionals (ACTAF) to Le Vinh Thao, director of Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, for his contribution to the wet rice cultivation in Cuba.
In a ceremony held at ACTAF headquarters in Havana, Thao expressed interest in developing production to support food security in the Caribbean country, where he graduated with a major agriculture at the Marta Abreu University in 1973.
He joined the island nation’s household rice production program in 2000.
The rice cultivation project, aided by Vietnamese experts, has been successful in six Cuban provinces, tripling output to 8-9 tons per hectare.
Vietnam and Cuba recently signed a protocol on disbursement and finance management for a program to develop rice production in Cuba until 2015.
