Embattled wood industry holds fair to attract new customers
Foreign guests take a look at Vietnam-made furniture at the 2008 Vietnam International Furniture and Home Accessories Fair mid-March
The wood and handicraft industry will host a trade fair in Ho Chi Minh City as it looks for new orders from international and domestic customers amid the economic downturn.

Tran Quoc Manh, deputy chairman of the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of HCMC, said the fair, to kick off next week, would help look for new customers as traditional markets cut back on their buying.

The four-day fair at the Saigon International Exhibition and Convention Center in District 7 will display indoor and outdoor products made by 150 Vietnamese and foreign businesses based here.

Manh said 600 international visitors have confirmed their attendance to his association, the organizer.

It has spent US$150,000 on advertising and promoting the fair in international markets including the Middle East and Africa.

Dang Quoc Hung, the association’s deputy chairman in charge of handicrafts, said Vietnamese businesses have seen orders plunge 60 percent compared to last year because of the recession affecting most of their major export markets like the US and Europe.

The wood industry’s exports were worth $2.8 billion last year, a 16 percent increase.

Exports have dropped 30 percent year-on-year in the first two months.
