The UK-based ED & F Man Cocoa Ltd. made the shipment through its representative office in Vietnam.
It plans to export a further 12 tons next month.
Ben Tre currently has nearly 2,000 ha under cacao, of which 750 ha are farmed with financial assistance from the US’s Agricultural Cooperative Development International/Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance.
It plans to grow cacao on a further 10,000 ha of coconut groves and orchards in 2006-10.
Besides Ben Tre, other provinces in southern Vietnam, like Binh Phuoc, Tien Giang, Dak Lak, and Dong Nai, too have been growing cacao trees since 2000.
The US-based Cargill corporation, the UK’s Amajaro Co., and Singapore’s Olam Group International had also set up offices in Vietnam to undertake cacao farming, Le Van Duc, deputy head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s department of cash crops, said.
