French designer Francine Pairon is one of three jurist-mentors of this year's Fashion Star Vietnam

The first season of Fashion Star Vietnam, which will award a total of VND1.5 billion (US$71,500) to its top three finalists, was launched early this week in Ho Chi Minh City.

Like the original US fashion reality show, which first aired on NBC in 2012, the Vietnamese version, organized by Cat Tien Sa Company, aims to uncover and promote local new, young designers.

Twelve contestants will compete under the guidance of jurist-mentors: French designer Francine Pairon; and Vietnamese designers Minh Hanh and Cong Tri. Miss Vietnam 2010 Ngoc Han will host the show, which is set to air on VTV3 on Saturdays at 8 p.m. from October 19. The final gala will be broadcast live on VTV3 on December 21.

The organizer will auction the collection on stage for the show's three investors:  LYNK of actress, Vietnam's first national tourism ambassador Ly Nha Ky; IVY moda; and Elise.

Apart from cash prize, the top three will have opportunity to visit Paris for a week.

Vietnam is not the only country to purchase Fashion Star's copyrights. Australian and German versions of the show are also in the works, with the latter set to be hosted by supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
