Vietnamese teen wins international piano contest

Hoang Pham Tra Mi, 13, of Hanoi, was awarded first prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Singapore on Sunday.

Mi, a student of the Vietnam National Academy for Music, presented an outstanding performance of Ballades No. 1 and Etudes No. 5.

Mi received US$500 and a certificate of distinction after beating 30 competitors from different countries in the "˜14 and under age group' to bag the first prize.

The competition, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, was organized for the first time by the Chopin Society of Singapore and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Contestants performed Chopin's works ranging from ballades, etudes, berceuse, to impromptus and preludes solely from memory.

The competition attracted 140 candidates from 15 countries including China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.

Mi has previously won piano competitions in South Korea and Russia but this is her biggest win yet.
