The third annual Yxine Film Festival (YxineFF), an online filmmaking contest, encouraged foreigners to compete as the event kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City on June 3.

At the launch at Hoa Sen (Lotus) University, YxineFF officially announced its theme, Ca Nhan (Individual). This year's contest will highlight the role of individuality in cinema. The event has already been held in Da Nang and Hanoi.

The last two years' contests were themed "Love" and "Belief."

Before calling for entries from filmmakers in HCMC, the contest screened some well-received films from the first and second events and organizers encouraged submissions from foreign filmmakers during two days of film screenings and discussions in Paris and Los Angeles in April and May.

Yxine FF 2012 also has expanded its categorizes which will give room for locals, foreigners and Vietnamese expats to submit 15, 20, 30 and 60 minute-long films.

YxineFF 2011's 120 films chosen from 150 entries attracted over two million online viewers. The organizing committee consists of filmmakers from Vietnam, the US, Australia, France and Germany. The awards and closing ceremony will be held in this December and broadcast live online.

The deadline for submissions is July 15 and the judges will start selecting winners in September.
