The Vietnamese community in Germany has been assigned to host that country's Asian Culture Festival, which will take place August 3 in the city of in Potsdam, news website Vietnamplus reported Friday.
Local authorities explained at a July 12 press conference that the Vietnamese community is the third largest group of foreigners in the state of Brandenburg, which includes Potsdam, and has made many cultural contributions both there, and in Germany as a whole.
The Thang Long Business Association, an organization of Vietnamese businesspeople in Potsdam, will work together with the Friends of Friendship Island Association to organize this year's festival themed "Fire and Water."
During the period of 2008 2012, the festival was hosted by the local Chinese community.
Nguyen Quoc Hung, director of the association, said the festival would be a good chance for local Vietnamese to introduce their culture to international friends.
Pham Ngoc Ky, chairman of the Vietnam Business Association in Germany said the festival will depict Vietnamese culture through music and dance, martial arts performances, an ao dai (traditional long dress) fashion show and a food festival.
A two-week exhibition featuring Zen Buddhist poetry from Vietnam's Ly and Tran dynasties and Vietnamese handicrafts and souvenirs will also be held.
Several local businesses have committed to donating total of 10,000 euros (US$13,143) to the event.
