Vietnamese American Michelle Nguyen was crowned Miss National Asia Pageant Saturday last week at the close of the fifth annual pageant in San Francisco.

The 19-year-old, known fully as Michelle Nguyen Thuy Trang, won the title over 20 other American beauties of Asian ancestry.

Nguyen won Miss USA Fashion 2009 and was the first runner-up at Miss Vietnam of Northern California 2009.

Nguyen is currently studying nursing at San Jose State University and returned to Vietnam early this year for some charity work. She said her dream is a stable job to help her mother take care of her 10-year-old sister and grandfather back home in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh.

Miss National Asia Pageant started in 2006 and is held annually in California for girls between 17 29 years of age living in the US. Contestants will compete in traditional costumes, swimsuits, party dresses and a talent show. The contest is sponsored by the Chinese Youth Organization.
