Firework artists from Vietnam's central hub Da Nang will represent their country for the first time at a fireworks festival in Canada this fall.

The city's fireworks team has received an invitation from the organizers of the Vancouver's Celebration of Light, which will be held between July 28 and August 4, said Vo Duy Khuong, vice chairman of the city People's Committee.

A group of seven people have been chosen to compete at the musical fireworks contest, Khuong said in a Thursday report on news website VnExpress.

The Vietnamese team will open the competition, while Brazil will continue on August 1 and Italy on the final night.

Their entire journey will be sponsored by organizers of the Canadian event, which was started in 1990 and has drawn an estimated annual audience of 1.4 million people since then as the pyrotechnics can be viewed from all over the city.

Last year, teams from Spain and Canada lost to the event's winner China.

Khuong said the Da Nang team is still preparing for the Da Nang International Fireworks Competition on April 29-30.

"After that, they will study the Celebration of Light and Canadian culture in order to design an impressive Vietnamese performance their first time out."

As of Thursday morning, 24 businesses have registered to sponsor the Da Nang fireworks competition, first held in 2008, with a total of VND27.5 billion (US$1.3 million).

The event's venue seats 25,000 people, with 16,000 seats to be sold for between VND200,000-300,000 ($14) each.

The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has sent a statement asking nearly 300 hotels to keep their prices normal during the event while more than 200 other hotels were asked to raise their prices by no more than 30 percent.
